RADICALLY UPCYCLED CAMERAS: THE ART OF BRANA VOJNOVIC

Self Portrait – Scancam 200 There are plenty of equipments out there, that could be recycled. Artist Brana Vojnovic talks about his way of making photography: not “clicking” for “catching the moment”, but finding, mixing and matching old equipments in order to obtain the results he wants. A process of upcycling that is an art in itself, the passion of a photographer who sees himself as a painter preparing his own tools. Hello Brana, thank you for sharing your time with us. Let’s start… Which role does photography play in your daily life? Photography is the most natural way to express myself. When and how did you first meet photography? I was 16 when I have started for the first [...]

BEING A CAMERA MAKER IN THE DIGITAL AGE: A TALK WITH EOK.GNAH

“Atoms are the New Bits”, Chris Anderson wrote two years ago, referring to the role of the Internet and digital culture in what he called “the Next Industrial Revolution”: “If the past 10 years have been about discovering post-institutional social models on the Web, then the next 10 years will be about applying them to the real world. (…) The Internet democratized publishing, broadcasting, and communications, and the consequence was a massive increase in the range of both participation and participants in everything digital – the long tail of bits. Now the same is happening to manufacturing – the long tail of things.” The booming of Maker Faires, local hackerspaces, Fablabs, virtual micro-factories, open source hardware tools, etc., proves that [...]

THE ART OF HOMEMAKING CAMERAS: A TALK WITH JNO COOK

Let’s go deeper into the art of homemaking cameras, talking with an artist who wanted to explore the value of photographic technology. Besides the image, as well as industry. When, and why, did you begin modifying and building cameras? I modified 35mm cameras in high school. I don’t know why. They were there, and I wanted to modify them. I have always taken apart everything I ever owned.  The “modifications” initially were simple: designed close-up lenses for a folding 35mm camera by calculating the point of focus. I must have learned from my father by example. He was always modifying things around the house, wether it was installing an exhaust fan in the kitchen, adding patio-door windows in the attic, [...]
